SW METRO NEWS AND EVENTS

MAY IS THE OFFICIAL BE-KIND-TO-ANIMALS MONTH

Animals play an important role in many of our lives. Here are a few ways you can raise awareness and make a difference:

  • Donate! Local animal shelters can benefit from your donations in many ways. Things you may consider donating include pet food and toys, bedding, or your time.
  • Report animal abuse! You can be the voice for an animal that is in trouble. Immediately report animal abuse and neglect to your local humane agency.
  • Volunteer with a local rescue group! Rescue organizations need help not only dealing directly with animal care, but also in areas such as administration, fundraising, and community events. Many groups are also in need of foster homes to provide temporary homes for animals as they wait for their forever home.
  • Teach children how to be kind to animals! Children love to learn about animals. Take time to teach them how to properly handle and care for pets and wildlife.
  • Encourage others to adopt their next pet! Great companion animals of all types are available at your local animal shelter-- from dogs and cats to rabbits and hamsters. Not only will you save an animal, you will gain a friend for life (and the pet you adopt will too!).
  • Create a space for wildlife in your own backyard! Plant trees and shrubs to give birds a place to hang out. You could also add a bird feeder or birdbath to the area, as well as hummingbird or butterfly habitats.

Spring Safety Tips for Your Pets

Spring has sprung! After a long winter, people and pets are ready to get out and enjoy the fresh air and warmer weather. To keep your pet healthy and safe this spring, please consider the following:

  • Protect your pet from pests/parasites—make sure you give your animals flea/tick and heartworm preventatives
  • Maintain your pet’s health—Spring is a great time to bring your pets in for a check-up and update their vaccinations
  • Maintain your pet’s appearance—extra grooming is often needed as your pet sheds its winter coat
  • Keep your pet safe when outside—always walk your dog on a leash and make sure pets have up-to-date ID tags. Microchipping is another great way to help identify your pet in the event they are lost and will greatly increase their chances of being returned home
  • Protect your pet from poisons—make sure you keep your animals away from fertilizers and pesticides which can be dangerous and sometimes fatal. Keep the Animal Poison Hotline number handy in case of an emergency 1-800-548-2423
  • Protect your pet from environmental toxins—don’t let you’re your dog swim in areas with algae or other pollutants
  • Sterilize your pet—help tackle the overpopulation problem and keep your pets happy and healthy by making sure they are spayed and neutered
  • Protect your pet from heatstroke—do not leave animals outside unattended or for long periods of time in the sun. Pets need ample water and shelter when they are outdoors, and never leave your pets inside the car during hot days.

Foster Homes Needed!

Spring is finally here and with it comes an influx of animals in need of a home. While we are always in need of foster homes, this time of year is especially problematic when it comes to breeding cats and their kittens. In addition to needing short-term foster homes for cats on temporary meds, cats requiring some socialization, and cats needing a break from being housed at Petsmart; we are now looking for people willing to house pregnant and nursing cats with their kittens. Fostering is fun and rewarding, and it allows you to become part of the overpopulation solution. The more fosters we have, the more animals we are able to save and find permanent homes for. SW Metro provides all medical care and supplies like food, litter boxes, toys, etc—all you need to provide is the love and attention they have probably never had. If you’d like additional information about our foster program, please call 952-368-PAWS (7297) and leave a message on line 3. You can also download an application from this website and fax to 952-487-5206.
